TipsGarage storage ideas: use the walls and ceiling

The floor is the most valuable space in a garage, and it’s usually the first thing to fill up. The fix is to move almost everything up.

A garage with bikes and tools on a slatwall, overhead storage racks with bins, and gray cabinets, leaving the floor clear.
Before and after of a Dallas–Fort Worth garage: cluttered with bins and bikes, then fitted with gray cabinets, slatwall, overhead racks and a vintage car parked inside.

Walls for what you use often

A wall system holds bikes, tools, helmets and garden equipment off the floor. Put the things you reach for weekly at arm’s height, and the occasional items higher.

Overhead racks for seasonal bins

Holiday decorations, camping gear and off-season items belong overhead. Use matching, labeled bins so you can see what’s in each from below.

Cabinets for the small stuff

Closed cabinets hide the clutter that makes a garage feel chaotic: paint, cleaning supplies, small tools. Group by category, one shelf per category.

Keep the floor clear

If it isn’t a car, a mat or a workbench, it shouldn’t live on the floor. A clear floor is what makes the space feel finished, and it’s easier to clean.

A real project

In one Dallas–Fort Worth garage, bins, bikes and boxes covered the floor. The finished garage has wall storage, overhead racks and cabinets, and room for the car again. Planned by Yaz. Built by a partner. Organized in two days.

How we handle it

We plan the layout, coordinate the build with a trusted partner, and then organize everything into its place, so the garage is ready to use when we leave.
