TipsMove-in checklist: what to unpack first

The first night in a new home should feel like home. Unpack in a deliberate order and the rest can wait a week.

Labeled moving boxes for bedroom, bath and kitchen in a sunlit new home, with the text "Unpack in this order."

Unpack in this order

  1. Beds and bath. Make the beds, set out towels and toiletries. You’ll be tired, and this is what you need first.
  2. Kitchen essentials. Plates, cups, a pan, coffee, basic cutlery, and a few staples.
  3. Everything else. Room by room, starting with the spaces you use most.

Your first 48 hours

  • Label boxes by room on the way in, not after.
  • Break down boxes as you empty them so the floor stays clear.
  • Put things where you’ll use them, not where they fit. You can refine later.
  • Leave decor and the least-used rooms for last.
